Field account
The Tarcoil Scuttler looked like a collapsed bollard until six legs unfolded beneath the black rope of its hide. It crossed the pier without lifting its belly from the boards, storing each shot, hook, and boot in the pitchy strands wound around its body. The harder it was struck, the tighter those coils became—and the more force returned through its next charge.
Observed behavior
A Scuttler tests pilings, hulls, and seawalls before choosing prey, learning which surfaces return the most momentum. It drives targets toward rotten boards and breaker rock. Loose shell, dry sand, and floating debris make its adhesive pads uncertain.

Ruin the footing
Crushed oyster shell and coarse dry sand foul the adhesive pads, turning the creature's speed against it.
