He asked what the shrine protected. Nobody answered quickly enough.

He'd entered shoulder-first through the cedar beams. A bronze lantern fell burning into the mud. Broken tokens covered his coat: crosses and river coins, flattened saint medals, carved teeth. The same stone maul had crushed them all. It hit the foundation next. A white surge overturned the kneeling benches. Our blows made his relics ring brighter.

Sister Vale picked up the lantern and named the travelers sheltered that winter. He stopped to listen. Then she asked what he protected. He had no answer. The light between his plates went out, and we drove him from the road before the rage returned.

The question precedes the destruction. Silence or hypocrisy can trigger it; a false answer will too. Foundations and protective symbols go before bodies, so the collapse scatters defenders. Resisted blows make the relics resonate and sustain his fury. Credible accounts of people actually saved create hesitation, particularly from a beneficiary. Worship offered to him is despised. After destroying a site, he takes one fragment and moves on. Away from sacred ground much of his power is lost.
