Field account

He entered the roadside shrine shoulder-first. Cedar beams exploded around him, and the little bronze lantern struck the mud still burning. Broken holy tokens covered his coat like scales: crosses, river coins, saint medals, carved teeth, each hammered flat by the same stone maul. He asked us what the place protected. No one answered quickly enough. The Zealot struck the foundation and a white surge traveled through the ground, overturning every kneeling bench. Our blows only made the relics ring brighter. Sister Vale stepped into his path, picked up the fallen lantern, and named each traveler the shrine had sheltered that winter. He stopped. Not defeated—listening. When she asked what he protected, he could not answer. The light went out between his plates, and we drove him from the road before rage found a new scripture.

Observed behavior

The Zealot announces itself by asking what a shrine, oath, or guardian protects. Silence, hypocrisy, or a false answer triggers immediate destruction. It attacks foundations and symbols before bodies, using structural failure to scatter defenders. Each resisted blow makes embedded relics resonate, sustaining its fury. A truthful account of lives genuinely protected creates hesitation, especially if spoken by a beneficiary. It despises worship directed at itself. Once a site falls, the Zealot takes one fragment and moves on; pursuing it away from sacred ground denies much of its power.
