Recovered natural history
What witnesses saw.
The field account preserves what witnesses understood before the encounter became doctrine. It is observation, not certainty.
Field account
The hymn had no words, only the sound people make before remembering why they came to a grave. It moved through the holler ahead of us. Lantern sparks gathered under strips of wet veil; little masks turned within them, never showing the same face twice. When the Haintveil Choir rose, it stood as a single tall mourner assembled from hundreds of small spirits. One gesture sent fog across the path in measured banks. Another made my brother's warning arrive from the wrong side of my head. Copper charms lifted from our packs and orbited the figure like notes on a staff. We could not fight the whole shape. We sang against it—an ugly work song with a beat the Choir had never heard—and its many bodies failed to agree on where our voices belonged. Individual sparks fled into the laurel, each carrying one unfinished syllable.
Observed behavior
The Choir shapes a site before directly threatening anyone. It divides sight with fog banks, shifts voices across the hollow, and places little masks on those whose fear can spread. When several marked people react together, the shared form grows taller and more precise. It supports other haints by hiding their approach and feeding them stolen names. Unfamiliar rhythms, broken breathing, and deliberate silence deny it a stable chorus. Scattering the anchor veils makes the spirits harder to coordinate, but each scrap must be kept apart until sunrise or the figure reforms behind the carriers.
Read the environment
The warning arrives before the creature.
Fog banks move in equal measures like breaths from a sleeping congregation.
Copper charms rise on their strings and point toward the same hollow.
A wordless hymn arrives through several familiar voices at once.
Survival doctrine
Recognize the rule. Break the advantage.
These are field principles, not promises. The Rift punishes anyone who mistakes one successful answer for a permanent law.
01
Unshared Rhythm
Irregular work beats and deliberately staggered breathing prevent the motes from maintaining one controlling figure.
02
Separated Veils
Its anchor scraps cannot coordinate across running water or direct sunrise; carry each piece to a different bank.
Recovered Field Plate
The sketch records its form. The surviving account records what it did.
01
Primary form
Humanoid or near-humanoid spectral outline with missing edges and one ritual object anchoring the design; wide threat presence with tendrils, fields, hanging pieces, or a visible aura.
02
Material detail
Many small bodies, motes, wings, masks, or lantern sparks forming a larger moving idea.
