Hainttrail Hound

Field account

Its tracks began as paw prints in wet leaves and ended as cold spots on stone. That is common with a Hainttrail Hound: half the animal remembers flesh, half remembers only pursuit. We found ours beneath a laurel arch, shoulders coiled and translucent ribs shining behind hide the color of rain. Copper tags hung from the trail ribbon caught in its teeth. It did not attack the scout in front. It waited until the pack train rounded a bend, then burst through the fog beside the last mule as though the hillside had exhaled it. The first bite carried no blood, only a sudden certainty that the road behind was safer than the road ahead. Our porter ran straight into the thicket. Keep people close enough to answer by name. These hounds hunt the instant between losing sight of a companion and admitting you are alone.

Observed behavior

The Hound tracks from the rear and tests group cohesion with borrowed footfalls, snapped branches, and familiar whistles. It attacks only when terrain or fog interrupts sight, choosing a target unlikely to receive immediate help. Its first impact drives prey away from companions; the second comes from the direction the victim believes is safe. Bright trail charms make it cautious, while spoken names help companions resist its isolating influence. If denied a solitary quarry, the Hound fades uphill and shadows the group until fatigue creates a better opening.
