The offered blessing
The Idol offered to heal us. There was real tenderness in it. We had watched what healing did to the scavengers at its feet.
They knelt under a glassless skylight, wounded and exhausted. Red dust covered the tiles except for the circle where the Idol stood. It had been human once. Extra joints stretched its wrists and knees. Fragments of sign lettering shone inside translucent skin, and mannequin hands rested on its shoulders. They moved when it spoke.
Light passed from a broken mirror through its body and closed the scavengers' cuts. Each time, more of their faces hardened into glass. They called it grace. We called it conversion.
Court dependence
Attendants meet danger while the Idol shelters and directs them from reflective architecture. Obedience receives healing. Dissent brings shame or disorientation, or the protective screen is withdrawn. It rarely needs to lie. Dependence is presented as the beautiful, grateful choice until care and becoming part of the display can no longer be separated.
Break the sightline and its coordination weakens. Cover a follower's reflection and they can reconsider an order with less emotional pressure. A threatened congregation provokes fierce protection. Its remaining human memory can still support a genuine bargain.

Move followers clear of all mirrors and polished surfaces. There they can question an order without amplified shame or gratitude.

Human Need
It still becomes tired and thirsty. It remembers. Remove the spectacle and offer ordinary care; that can draw it out of the atrium.
