Field account
The Atrium Idol stood beneath a skylight long since stripped of glass. Red dust covered the tile, but not the circle around its bare feet. It had once been human. The proportions remained, stretched through extra wrist and knee joints, while translucent skin held bits of sign lettering like devotional gold. Mannequin hands rested on its shoulders and moved when it spoke. The scavengers kneeling nearby were exhausted, wounded, and utterly devoted. Each time the Idol raised a many-jointed arm, light from a broken mirror passed through its body and closed their cuts. Each healing left another hard, glassy patch on their faces. They called it grace. We called it conversion. The Idol offered us the same blessing with genuine tenderness. That is its danger: it does protect its chosen, and only later makes protection impossible to separate from becoming part of the display.
Observed behavior
The Idol stays near reflective architecture and lets attendants confront danger while it strengthens, directs, and shelters them. It rewards obedience with healing light and punishes dissent through shame, disorientation, or withdrawal of its protective screen. It rarely lies outright; instead it frames dependence as the only beautiful or grateful choice. Breaking sightlines between Idol and court weakens its coordination. Followers whose reflections are covered can reconsider orders without the full emotional pressure. Threatening the congregation drives the Idol into fierce protection, while appealing to its surviving human memory may open a genuine bargain.
