Atrium Assessor

Field account

The atrium still smelled of perfume beneath the mold. Sunlight fell twenty stories through a broken skylight and stopped in a perfect square on the flooded marble. The Assessor waited inside it, tall as the directory board, its body a transparent column of escalator teeth, suit cloth, and drifting contract tags. It appraised us without eyes. A gold number appeared above each head. Mine rose when I touched the railing, doubled when I looked toward the elevators, and flashed red when I lied about why we had come. The floor rearranged around those numbers. Escalators ran backward into deep water. Glass doors opened only for the lowest value. Mae shattered a display case and threw the gems into the flood. The Assessor turned toward the unpriced ruin, unable to decide whether destruction was loss or evidence. We crossed the square while its tags argued in a hundred dry whispers.

Observed behavior

The Assessor measures before restricting. It assigns changing value according to possessions, access credentials, visible injury, stated purpose, and whatever prejudices survive in the building's old systems. Doors, escalators, light, and flood routes then favor high or low values depending on the original institution. The spirit does not pursue beyond its architecture; it makes architecture deny departure. Truthful but unclassifiable actions confuse it more than lies, which simply increase suspicion. Deliberate gifts, shared credentials, and collective movement can blur individual prices. Breaking valuable objects creates a temporary contradiction, though repeated vandalism is soon recategorized as a predictable liability.
